Penn State University Tested & Proven
The Department of Dairy and Animal Science at Penn State University conducted an extensive, independent research trial on these feeders in 1994. They have concluded the J & L Haysaver will indeed Save Hay and Pay for itself with Hay Savings in short order!
“Feeders make a big difference in feeding hay. There was a definite advantage to using the cone style (J & L Haysaver) compared to conventional ring style in our trial. The hay was fed to mature beef cows in dry lot in the two types of feeders, and feed waste or refusal was weighed and sampled.
There was a very significant difference in feed wastage in the two feeders. The cone type feeder (J & L Haysaver) averaged 1.9% in feeding loss, it has important economic considerations.
We were extremely pleased with the results obtained with this feeder. These results clearly show the type of feeder that is used will have significant impact on the economics of any hay- feeding system.”

We are currently feeding 11 low line angus cows with the Model 8R LP, low profile. These cows are not dwarfs, just standard angus with short legs. We are feeding small square bales and I am impressed with how little hay is lost, wasted. I would guess we waste more hay carrying the bales to the feeder than the cows waste while feeding. With the drought last summer and hay production significantly down, hay loss at feeding would sting. We really like your product and have neighbors interested in similar feeders.
